# How Salesforce reports connect with Geckoboard

Learn how Salesforce report types work with Geckoboard and how grouped fields from your report determine what visualizations to use.

August 11, 2025

This guide explains how your Salesforce reports connect to Geckoboard widgets. You'll learn which report types are supported and how your report's structure determines which visualizations you can create.

## Supported Salesforce report types

Geckoboard works with reports from Salesforce Enterprise, Unlimited, Developer, or Performance editions. You can either build a new custom report from scratch or customize an existing standard report in Salesforce. Supported report types include:

- **Summary reports** \- Group your data by specific fields
- **Tabular reports** \- Display data in simple rows and columns
- **Matrix reports** \- Group data by both rows and columns

**Note:** Joined reports are not currently supported.

## How your Salesforce report structure maps to widgets

Your Salesforce report contains two types of fields that determine how you can visualize the data in Geckoboard:

- **Grouped fields** \- The categories or dimensions you're grouping data by (like Opportunity Owner or Stage)
- **Summary fields** \- The numerical values being measured (like Amount or Probability)

## How Salesforce fields work with different widget types:

### Line, Column, and Bar Charts

- **X-Axis options:** Grouped fields
- **Y-Axis options:** Summary fields

### Leaderboards

- **Labels:** Grouped fields
- **Values:** Summary fields

### Number and Gauge widgets

- **Available metrics:** Your summary fields only

Number widgets display a single summarized numeric value (Sum, Average, Minimum, or Maximum) calculated from all records in your report. For example: Sum of Total Sales Amount, Average Probability, or Maximum Price.

**Important:** The Record Count metric (number of items) is always available for each grouped field in your report, regardless of widget type.

## Building widgets from a Salesforce report

### Example of a Salesforce report structure

**Grouped fields:**
- Opportunity Owner
- Stage

**Summary fields:**
- Amount (sum)
- Probability (average)
- Number of Employees (average)

The report preview would look something like this:

### Example of what you can build in Geckoboard with the above report

#### Line, Column, and Bar Charts

- **X-Axis options:** Opportunity Owner, Stage
- **Y-Axis options:** Sum of Amount, Average Probability, Average Number of Employees, Record Count

#### Leaderboards

- **Labels:** Opportunity Owner, Stage
- **Values:** Sum of Amount, Average Probability, Average Number of Employees, Record Count

#### Number and Gauge widgets

- **Available metrics:** Sum of Amount, Average Probability, Average Number of Employees, Record Count

Each widget type gives you different ways to visualize the same data, so you can choose the format that best communicates your metrics to your team.
